La Jolla Institute for Allergy & Immunology, a leading biomedical research institute focused on diseases of the immune system, has an immediate job opportunity available in External Relations for a Development Services Analyst in the San Diego area.
External Relations at the La Jolla Institute is a start-up operation looking for an enthusiastic and energetic individual for a unique position. The Development Services Analyst is someone with strong organizational skills required to participate in and occasionally lead projects in development operations, as well as interest in development research and reporting, and updating content on the web. Experience in development/fund raising is a must. Preferred experience with running reports and queries using Raiser's Edge fund raising database. Ability to synthesize and understand biomedical terminology a plus.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Development Services Analyst
- Maintain and manage data entry and gift processing activities on Raiser's Edge, and work with in-depth data acquisition methods for development records. Raiser's Edge database management duties including designing gift reports and queries. Requires strong multitasking skills and knowledge of MS Access/ Excel/Word; Crystal Reports and Raiser's Edge experience strongly desired.
- Support a comprehensive development research program, including strategic research and analysis of top-tier donor prospects, corporations, foundations and key volunteers.
- Develop written materials including prospect/donor research such as profiles and backgrounds; memoranda of meetings, visits, and telephone conversations; preparations for meetings and events; copy for web and Institute publications and brochures; acknowledgment receipt letters for gifts; donor reports etc.
- Lists are a primary source for the many activities in a development operation and include: working with the Director of Development in the creation of lists, checking for accuracy of lists, the production of letters and invitations from lists; checking for duplication in multiple lists, etc.
- Work with Director of Development on various aspects of fund raising events including site selection, invitation lists, save-the-date notices, RSVPs, volunteers, menus and caterers, audio/visual arrangements, seating and entertainment; writing program outline and scripts for speakers, and briefings for leadership who will be in attendance etc.
- Coordinate proposal and report calendar, and interact as necessary with Director of Development to communicate assignments and deadlines.
- Position supports the Director of Development, and is responsible for fund raising office duties and mailings. May include general administrative support including photocopying, data entry, and systems for the Development office, as required.
- Other projects and duties as assigned.
Web Content
- Edit existing web content as required and collaborate with External Relations team members to ensure consistency across all site pages.
- Assist with e-mail campaigns, online public relations and fundraising, and webinars.
- Maintain and adhere to a schedule for updating web content and uploading news items.
- Willing to help in all areas to make the web site as wonderful as possible.
- BA/BS Degree and three years' fund raising experience preferred or combined experience in development, communications, or related field. Experience writing and interpreting biomedical research terminology a plus.
- Outstanding capacities for communication, personal presentation, organization, self-motivation, accuracy, follow-through, timeliness, consistency, great attention to detail, and the ability to handle a multitude of tasks under deadline pressure.
- Strong writing and editing skills.
- Knowledge of and experience in foundation, corporate, and/or individual fundraising.
- Knowledge of HTML and web and graphics applications a bonus (e.g., Dreamweaver, Photoshop, Flash).
- Ability to brainstorm ideas and concepts, develop compelling communication and messaging action plans based on research and other themes.

Vivarium Technician 1
Under the direct supervision of the Vivarium Supervisor, the Vivarium Technician I is primarily responsible for maintaining cages and accessories in a clean and sanitary state. Routinely will be responsible for autoclaving cages and accessories for use in the animal rooms. Responsible for maintenance of animal facility in compliance with USDA, NIH, AAALAC and other applicable laws and regulations.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
• Clean and sanitize cages and accessories
• Operate and maintain cage wash and autoclave equipment
• Fill clean cages with bedding
• Set up units for specialized caging for either sterile or BSL2/3 animals
• Wash and sterilize water bottles and fill with acidified water
• Maintain ample supply of clean cages and accessories for use by Investigators
• Daily maintenance of cage washer and autoclave
• Sweep, mop and disinfect floors in washrooms, halls and support areas
• Facility sanitation responsibilities include disinfecting walls, ceilings and other surfaces on a routine basis
• Cleans and sanitizes the support equipment
• Euthanize animals in accordance with AVMA guidelines and prepare carcasses for disposal.
• Other duties as assigned by supervisor.
Leveling Requirements
High school diploma or equivalent. Previous laboratory animal experience a plus. AALAS certification at ALAT or higher level desired. Must be willing to work a physically demanding job.
1. Must be able to lift 50 lbs. Must be able to lift and carry 25 pounds easily.
2. Must be able to use a step stool/ladder to reach objects overhead.
3. Must have manual dexterity in both hands.
4. Must be able to bend down and /or stoop repeatedly through out the workday.

9. Must be able to maintain written records in English as required by SOP and regulations.
10. Must be able to work prolonged periods wearing personnel protective equipment such as masks, gloves, lab coat or scrubs and other apparel as required.
11. Must not be allergic to animals or their bedding.
12. Must be able to stand for prolong periods. This job has very limited work while sitting.
13. Must be able to see and identify differences in cage and accessory types.
14. Must be able to observe visually the cleanliness of cages and accessories.
15. Must be able to work weekends and holidays on a rotating basis.
16. Must be able to exercise diplomacy and flexibility in interactions with multinational scientific staff.

Technical Support Specialist
Job Summary
Provides hardware and software technical support to end users and IRT department project managers. Assists in the development of standard procedures and publishes documentation for network and technical support activities as directed by Technical Support Supervisor. Assists in the licensing control, installation, and upgrading of institute software assets. Coordinates equipment installation, inventory control and decommissioning. Experience with Macintosh operating system and hardware required. Experience with Windows operating system and software recommended.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Technical support of users in the use of file and electronic mail systems; including monitoring and troubleshooting file/email servers.
- Staffs the Institute help desk and any/all help systems.
- Performs maintenance on computer network, including hardware repair and/or replacement, software diagnostics and traffic monitoring.
- Assists with workstation inventory control in conjunction with Operations/Purchasing personnel.
- Works with department manager to establish and maintain network security systems.
- Assists in the specification, licensing control, installation, and upgrading of institute software assets. Maintains software license records.
- Provides strategic planning advice to Technical Support Supervisor regarding expansion of IT services to users.
Leveling Requirements
B.S. degree in database/information/business systems or related field or 1-3 years experience in a Help Desk/Tech Support environment. Strong interpersonal skills are essential and ability to work in a professional non-computer savvy environment. Bioinformatics Postdoc for Immunology Applications
We are looking for a talented and highly motivated postdoc to join the Immune Epitope Database and Analysis Resource (IEDB) bioinformatics team. The IEDB (http://www.immuneepitope.org) is an NIH-funded bioinformatics resource that aids in the development of vaccines, immunotherapeutics, and diagnostics, and assists scientists better understand immune mechanisms. Candidates will work with the IEDB team to analyze data and develop software tools to model immune responses. Candidates will have the opportunity to expand their knowledge and working experience in bioinformatics and immunology while working at one of the country's top immunological research institutes.
Interested candidates are required to have a PhD degree. The degree will ideally be in bioinformatics, but candidates with equivalent skills and interests in computer science, statistics, and biomedicine will be considered as well.
Experience with Python, Perl, R, Linux, Django, VMWare and Eclipse IDE is desirable, and background knowledge of immunology, biochemistry, and bioinformatics is a strong plus. Salary will be commensurate with experience.
Immunology Epitope Curator with Organic Structure Focus
We are seeking motivated individuals to contribute to the Immune Epitope Database (www.immuneepitope.org), a bioinformatics resource that aids in the development of vaccines, immunotherapeutics, and diagnostics, and assists scientists to better understand immune mechanisms. The on-line database includes data collected from peer-reviewed journal articles by curators. Candidates will have the opportunity to work on an NIH-funded program at one of the country’s top immunological research institutes.
This position requires strong knowledge of adaptive immunology, the ability to interpret and dissect scientific research articles for pertinent data, attention to detail, familiarity with personal computing, and the ability to work in an independent, efficient and highly productive manner. The Curator’s duties include interpreting scientific articles, extracting the relevant data and entering these data into the database for access by the scientific community. At this time, we are particularly seeking candidates with experience in the interpretation and generation of structural models of organic molecules such as carbohydrates, lipids and small compounds, along with knowledge of the basis of immunological recognition of such type of molecules. Candidates should be quick learners in order to become contributing members of the curation team as quickly as possible. Candidates should also have a degree in immunology, microbiology, biochemistry, or related field. Preference will be given to those holding a Masters or Ph.D.

Job Title: Postdoctoral Fellow
Several postdoctoral research positions are available as of January 2009 in our Division of Cell Biology, at the La Jolla Institute for Allergy and Immunology (www.liai.org), a highly dynamic and successful immunology research institute located on the UCSD campus adjacent to the science-rich environment of the Torrey Pines Mesa, to study various aspects of T lymphocyte signaling and activation. Areas under investigation include the function and regulation of SLAT in the immune system (JCI 117:2164, 2007; Immunity, in press, 2008), regulation of T cell activation and anergy by reversible protein palmitoylation (Immunity 24:513, 2006), and a structure-function analysis of PKC-theta (JBC 282:21467, 2007; Adv. Exp. Med. Biol. 584:1, 2006). We use a combination of immunological, molecular, cell biological and genetic in vitro and in vivo approaches, including high-resolution imaging and mouse disease models, for which all state of the art resources and facilities are available.
We seek highly qualified and motivated individuals with 0-2 years of postdoctoral experience, who are capable of working independently and as team members. Experience in immunology, cell and molecular biology, biochemistry, retroviral expression, cell imaging and/or animal disease models is a plus. - Viral Vaccine Immunology
Job Summary
A
postdoctoral position is open in the laboratory of Dr. Shane Crotty in
the area of viral vaccine immunology. The laboratory studies the
cellular and molecular mechanisms regulating the development of long
term antibody and memory B cell responses, including the roles of CD4 T
cells, specific proteins of interest, and aspects of neutralizing
antibody selection. The goal of the laboratory is to elucidate the
immunobiology of successful vaccines and apply those
principles/mechanisms to the development of future vaccines. The
smallpox vaccine is the primary experimental model system used, both in
mice and man, with addition viral and protein immunogen systems also
utilized.
Requirements
